On April 27th, 2021, ShapeShift released a new version of the KeepKey firmware, v7.1.2, which includes better "stack canaries." Credit goes to security researcher Christian Reitter, who responsibly disclosed to us how they could be improved.
No user funds are at risk; this is an additional update to provide even more proactive security management for one of the industry’s most trusted hardware wallets.
"Stack canaries" are a defense-in-depth measure that makes it more difficult for any undiscovered vulnerabilities to be used in an attack. We recommend you make sure your KeepKey is always up to date so that you have the best protection available.
